Looking scary!

Looking scary!

A closer view than from the hut. Quite a few plaques on the wall but the one that stood out was the plaque regarding an inexperienced hiker/climber who died on this mountain. The plaque was in memory of this young American giving fair warning to the dangers of climbing such a formidable mountain without adequate mountaineering knowledge or the knowledge of the quickly changing alpine weather. 9/16/08.

You and I know ...

at those altitudes, the winds can come up within a minute's notice, creating "white-out" conditions and extreme drops in temperature.

However, it's true that even "experienced"
climbers die on mountains. The destiny of
the climber always depends on what MOOD the
mountain chooses to REVEAL to you.

Re: You and I know ...

Oh that is VERY true. The plaque implied the young man did not have any knowledge, yet tried climbing the Matterhorn anyway and lost his life. At least with knowledge, your odds are a bit better at LIVING.
