Looking up the backside (NE side) of the summit pinnacle and the snowfield there. The route up this side weaves up through the gendarmes. This early in the season, I was able to do so until the last gendarme (with some Class 3-4 scrambling around the other side). From the last one, I postholed thigh deep in the snow up to the summit rocks.

Quite the contrast

Brian, there is a trail under all that snow, one that the lookouts used to plod up and down. Compare your pic to this one that I took on Oct. 22nd. The lack of snow changes this from a class 3 as you had to deal with to a class 2 by the trail. Thanks also for your comments on the TR.

Re: Quite the contrast

Yep, and had the snow been firmer and I had crampons, it would have been a cakewalk instead of a moat-trap for me. All depends on when you go, eh? Glad you got up this one. Bummer about the bee stings though!
