The Three King's blessing, on a house of Penìa (upper Val di Fassa).
* * *
In this picture you can see a written made over the door of a house in Penia, in the upper Fassa Valley. This is a rite common in all the countries of german language, and in all the countries of former Austro-Hungarian Empire too (I saw that in Trentino and in Slovenia). The three letters “C”, “M”, “B”, indicate the initial of the names of the
Three Kings (Caspar, Melchior, Baltazar); the numbers indicate the year in which the written is done (in this picture, 1836). It’s an ancient belief that this written brings the protection of the Three Kings to the house and its dwellers.
