Male Western Tanager

This is a male Western tanager. Most members of the colorful tanager family live in Central and South America, but this is one of the four species found in the US and Canada. We spotted him on the ascent to Bradley Lake in Grand Teton NP, June 2009.

Great picture!

How do you know it's a female? I thought females were supposed to have yellow heads. Either way, great pic Arthur. Birds are so much fun to watch.

Uh . . . "female" because of a typo in my guide book! It struck me as odd to see such a colorful "female" and I should have double-checked my other guidebooks at home. Thanks for asking. (blush)

I was fortunate enough

to see a Summer Tanager here in Arizona
feeding on honeybees near some beehive boxes.

The tanager I saw was completely red, so would that make it male or female?

Does anybody have an Audubon book I can borrow ??? ??
