Lowest peak I've climbed, but one of the most unique!
Not a difficult hike at all, but provides a great view over the golden canyon. Was worried the whole time that I'd be in the way of peoples photos from Zabriskie Point, but that doesn't ruin the enjoyment of the summit.

Exposed butt sliding
Hiked up from Golden Canyon TH. Had no difficulty locating the correct route. I found the descent to be rather challenging; the terrain is quite hard-packed and there is severe exposure and not much room for error on both sides of the ridge. I scooted down the steepest parts on my butt with the aid of a trekking pole.
That all being said, wow! I continued on to the Zabriskie Point TH and up Red Cathedral before looping back down on the Gower Gulch Trail. I managed to avoid most of the crowds and spent a lot of the day hiking by myself in relative solitude, which was a treat in this busy area.

Exposure is Intense
Exposure of the route is intense, as is exposure to sun. Carry more water than you know you will need. We didn't and paid on the climb back to Zabriske Point.

The Best
This is the most bad-ass little peak. After one month I just had to come back.
Note:
I made a 3rd ascent with Heather, January 3, 2015.

Unique!
This was certainly a surprise from any other kind of mountaineering I have ever done. I give the standard route 5 stars just because of how interesting the terrain was. I would recommend this place to a friend.

A Wicked Little Peak
Golden Canyon is definitely one of the neatest places on earth and Manly Beacon is an awe-inspiring sight. This is the only peak I have climbed that has a negative starting elevation. The day after climbing Mount Whitney we came to Golden Canyon with only an hour left of daylight. Josh Lewis and I ran up and down a number of narrow ridges in a geological maze until we found the right way to access the beacon. Talk about knife-edge dirt! We barely made it out before dark. Very exciting terrain!

Third time
It had been eleven years and was nigh time for another visit to this neat little summit. Just as much fun as before, and a good place to reminisce since this was my first summit in the West. I hope to go up with my son in April 2011.

Sunset on the Summit
My first visit to Death Valley and my first peak in the area. I watched the sunset from the summit. I did Pyramid Peak and Eagle Mountain the following days.
Route Climbed: from Zabriskie Point, from Golden Canyon Date Climbed: April 2, 1996 and March 23, 1997
My brother Chris and I hiked up here twice; it was my introduction to the Great Golden West. Easy hike, a little steep and loose near the summit, but the most memorable part (both times) was being dive-bombed by birds that must have been nesting up there.
Route Climbed: Southern-most ridge Date Climbed: Dec. 27th, 2003
Ascended the Beacon with hyperboliticians after following Gower Gulch up to Zabriskie Point. The purchase was quite loose as the soil condition is quite powdery. The views of the Badlands, the Red Cathedral, and Death Valley below were spectacular. The variation in colors is remarkable!
