This spot is definitely pretty. I can certainly understand why Mr. Pratt would want to make his summer home here. Its such an amazingly unique transition ecosystem in this canyon that I almost wish it could've stayed hidden. If you tread here, please do it lightly: this place is precious.
Bright beautiful family hike to Pratt cabin. Will have to come back and try the Notch.
The Notch is a must do hike. Let me know how it goes.
Shaylee, Kessler, Kimberly and I awoke to high winds so we headed for McKittrick Canyon. We thought that the wind wouldn’t be as bad in the canyon since it is more heavily vegetated than the slopes of the mountains. McKittrick Canyon is also known as the most beautiful spot in Texas.
We hiked up the canyon, but it was really windy in the open areas. Even so the kids actually enjoyed being blown around by the wind and were quite amused by it. We stopped and checked out the historic Pratt Cabin before continuing up the trail to the Grotto which is sort of an above ground cave, complete with formations. After taking a very long lunch and relaxing, we headed back to the trailhead in strong winds.
Scott, hope the winds dont discourage you from trying the Notch.
This is a popular hike but not crowded in November. Hiked to the Grotto and back. Seeing the fall colors was unplanned and just a coincidence. It made the canyon even prettier than it normally would be.
Thanks for posting. Try hiking to the Notch next time.
Went for a hike during a 1 week stay at GUMO.
How was it?
Nice and quiet in November though :)
Thanks for posting.
but they're serious about closing time...
I had wanted to hike it last year to see the leaves but I wasn't able to. I finally made it this year. It was nice, a few trees had some rich colors (I guess I was expecting more, I'm from the east coast, VA). Lots of people on the trail.
Did a great day hike and the fall colors were great. The canyon has great desert canyon beauty
Thanks for posting. Did you happen to try hiking to the Notch?
I'd love to see what's up the canyon in the sensitive area where the NPS doesn't want people to go.
Would be kinda nice to sneek a peek!
