Ha!Mean? I don't think so; I've never
seen them mean. But yes, they are
like tiny 'pollen-gathering'

mean, yesI have seen males fly right into each other. The sound of the wings whacking each other is amazing. The favorite trick of the smarter males is to come in from above, the extra downward airflow gives them an advantage over the lower bird.

Re: mean, yesWe have dozens around our home, and they are so much fun to watch. They certainly can be fiesty! I watch them zoom in and out of the bannister rails on my deck chasing each other. They remind me of the star wars "scooter things" that zoom through the trees with the ewoks.
I've been dive bombed several times myself, but never poked in that way. I have had them lick me when I was wearing bright red.
They are amazing little creatures.

AggressiveMy son has Anna's hummingbirds in his yard. They do not migrate and are very territorial. They are also proprietary as to bird feeders. Yesterday he saw one chasing his neighborhood peregrine falcon. (an under reported comeback story)

Re: AggressiveYes, they are quite fiesty.... I have also watched them chase ravens and other large birds. I have seen them attack each other and other birds, hitting them with their beaks.... never a falcon though.... wow, that must have been something to watch.
