Meany Memorial Seat

Meany Memorial Seat

The Meany Memorial Seat at the top of Second Burroughs is a sight to behold. Prof. Edmond Meany had been a president of the Mountaineers and was an ardent conservationist so the seat was an appropriate memorial. Also named for Prof. Meany are nearby Meany Crest, above Summerland, Mt Meany in the Olympics, Meany Hall on the U of W campus and a hotel in the University District. (The precise name of the hotel changes from time to time.)

Blue Meanies

Edmond Meany wasn't that kind of guy. He was such a well regarded person that when they had to tear down Meany Hall (where I took several memorable classes) in 1965 after an earthquake damaged it beyond repair, They named the new building after him. On Armistice Day, 1931 my parents--no, they weren't my parents yet--spent the first night of their honeymoon in the Edmond Meany Hotel, so when I unexpectedly came upon the Meany Seat at the top of Second Burroughs, I was overjoyed and got my wife to take this picture.
