Menziesia (Menziesia ferruginea)

Also known as fool's huckleberry or mock azalea, this shrub is common in cool moist forests on rich soils. Its range extends from Alaska to California and to much of the Rocky Mountains. It can form extensive shrub fields that are very difficult to walk through. Photo from the North Fork Clearwater River, Idaho.
