Climbed Royce and Merriam from basecamp at Honeymoon lake - which has some great campsites along the SE shore. The summit has two highpoints - the topo map marks the south point as the peak, which was easy class 3, but the register turned out to be on the north point, which was also an easier climb. The register filled out in 2016 so people are just signing scraps of paper
Enjoyable scramble. Stay close to the ridge for bigger moves on more secure rock (vs. less steep, but looser scree further right). Next person up might want to bring another small notebook, as it is full.
Climbed as much of the NE Ridge as I could, dropping down onto the NE face in a couple spots to avoid class 5. Really enjoyable scrambling. Continued down to the saddle and on to Royce, then Feather.
Edit: Surprised to see the comment of no register in June, I found the typical cylinder right at the top with a notebook dating to 2005.
Day hike combined with Royce Peak. No summit register. Windy day.
Dayhike from Pine Creek Pass TH to Merriam and Royce. It snowed on me for most of the day, but luckily there wasn't too much wind so it wasn't very cold.
NW ridge from the Merriam-Royce saddle. Stayed high to keep it close to Class 3. Simple stuff....then off to Royce.
Up from the saddle after Royce earlier and Pilot Knob before that. An nice easy 2nd class romp to the summit. It was a touch on the windy side when I was up there but the views were great!
This is a great looking peak and the climb to the saddle over consolidated snow was fun. I did Merriam first, Royce second. Merriam is the better climb.
From Honeymoon Lake via Pine Creek pass with MD who stayed at Royce Lakes for a few hours while I went up Merriam and then Royce. Was concerned I would need an ice ax on the permanent snow field below the saddle but I was able to stay on dry land the whole way up. Merriam is a very nice looking peak from the East.
Nice quick side trip after Royce. Great area, hope to return often.
Hiked with my son over Royce Pass, up Merriam and back via Pine Creek Pass. Perfect day for a climb.
Day-hiked north buttress (IV 5.10b) with Bryan. Awesome climb. Scenic area. TR http://vividrea1ity.blogspot.com/2012/11/direct-north-buttress-of-merriam-car-to.html
Quick start to the day en route to Royce, Feather, and 12918. No snow travel needed in the couloir this low snow year.
Impressive looking peak and beautiful surroundings. Despite some annoying snow sections and running out of water, the scramble was enjoyable.
A long dayhike. Rather windy. Air-quality was less than great, due to the Mariposa Fire, I assume. But still great.
Sticky class 2 slabs made this a fast climb, and the final class 3 bit dropped me right at the register. How cool is that?
Climbed out of pine creek with Royce for a long day. Alternate for day 2 of the challenge.
much nicer scramble than Royce Peak
on a backpacking trip, via Royce-Merriam Saddle
Beautiful, calm day with great views. Got some fun class 3 in by sticking close to the ridge.
