Middle part of standard route

Looking down at the middle part of the ascent. You see stone markers on the rocky outcrop on the left and on the track leading to the glacier (where you put your crampons on). Then you zigzag behind the ice fall to reach the right boarder of the pic (better click on pic to enlarge and see traces), October 2006.

Looks like lots of water...

Looks like a huge glacier lake down in the valley. Is this a normal lake or do the himalayan glaciers the same like the european ones: melting?
Anyway, interresting shot! Congratulations!
Cheers Lukas

Re: Looks like lots of water...

Unfortunately your assumption of melting himalayan glaciers is absolutely true. This is one great fear of environmentalists that those glaciers will massiveliy retreat the next decades. A similar glacial lake in the nearby Hinku valley (the Sabai Tsho) broke thorugh the moraine some years ago. Devastating the valley and causing deaths. There are some pics on Summitpost (see Mera Peak). This might happen to some other moraines in the Himalayas but even in the European Alps. Best Regards, Peter.
