Midway Geyser Basin

Midway Geyser Basin

Looking into the massive crater of Excelsior Geyser. This crater discharges 4,050 gallons of boiling water into the Firehole River every minute.

Swimable?

Is the Firehole River warm enough year round to swim in (Maybe too hot)??? Obviously the geyser itself would boil you in a second but is the discharge into the river hot\warm\just right??

Great photo again!

Re: Swimable?

Saw your question and can answer-- the river doesn't freeze over, and you could swim very close to the discharge as you might soak in hot spring, but you might freeze to death getting in and out of the water itself. At Boiling River, near Gardiner, people do go in the water year-round, but it's not my kind of thing to do that in winter.
