Mojave Prickly Poppy

Mojave Prickly Poppy (Argemone corymbosa) along the descent route from Little Pyramid Peak Lake Mead Area, Nevada. March 2008. (The plant in the background on the left is a Sunray) Argemone corymbosa is a perennial forb. Its stems and leaves are covered in stout spines and thus its name. The flowers are large and white in color.

Outstanding Prickly Poppy. What is
perennial? Does that mean it only blooms
at a specific time of the year, and
becomes dormant in winter?

growing in eastern California. I think
it might be Engelmann's Prickly Pear?

Larry, perennials live for many years. Some become dormant and loose all the foilage and appear dead but their roots and crown are still alive and the plant revives in spring.
Annuals die after about a year and have to start all over from seeds.

I don't like Salt Cedars, but a photo is good so others learn what tamarisks look like. I know of a really cool canyon called Moonscape in Lake Mead with great hot springs flowing there, but it is all ruined by tamarisks. If they were gone this would be such a gorgeous spot. Best of all it's not easy to get to so crowds would not be an issue. Oh, well.
