South route
Took the fast (south) route. Rough road from Slatina to Burnei's sheepfold, though doable with a regular sedan. Easy ascent leading to the Bad Valley Cauldron (Caldarea Vaii Rele), with impressive views (including a beautiful waterfall to the left of the trail). The Cauldron is a flat plateau, easy walk until the Vistea Gate (Portita Vistei). The real ascent starts here, moderately challenging, some steeper angles. After reaching the Vistea Mare Peak, there is a short 20-30 minutes ridge walk until the Moldoveanu Peak, with some helping chains placed conveniently. The whole trail can be done in less than a day.
Quick hike from Balea Lake on the red marks via "la trei pasi de moarte". Reached the top after 5 hours then returned the same day via Podragu hut - "Fereastra Zmeilor"

Dayhike from west
Day hike from Lac Balea. Late start at 8:45 and got back to the road at sunset 6:30pm. I camped at the trailhead before and after the hike. I saw a wild fox at the base camp and even a black bear (being chased by a dog!) on the approach along Transfagaras highway. During hike, weather was good and clear skies. I met an Israeli couple and encountered 10 local hikers along the way.
The previous October I visited Sambata monastery. But overnight a large snowfall killed my hike. Plus I was rehabbing and on crutches so I saved it for this year.

south east route
I climbed the South east route (Valea Rea). this route is quite direct and popular starting at 1410m. You have to drive approx 35 km on an unpaved dirt road (but doable at slow pace with a normal car unless it rained a lot before, of course, much better with a 4WD). It takes apoprox 1h30/2hrs dribving from slatina. Dont' follow another dirt road before being actually sure to follow the valea rea road.
the climb is quite straightforward from the end of the road whre you leave your car. the steepest part is approx 15mn after the start with a direct 550/600m steep part on a good path, then you arrive in a glacial cirque from where you join the ridge. You have the option walking 380km on your right to join vistea mare refuge (only 12 people can sleep there, so bring sleeping bags anyway, plus a tent in case it's full or you arrive late) or to attemps direct Vistea Mare. after a short way down, just follow with abit of care the ridge before reaching Top of Romania.
a very nice place
The approach from Balea Lac is perhaps more spectacular but much much longer, what is to be considered especially if weather is unsettled since you'll be expposed to thunderstorms on the ridge. hence the South east route is safer and more direct (approx 3.2 km in direct line from parking area, compared to more than 10 km from Balea lac).

Traversed the crest of the Fagaras Mountains over 5 days from Cabana Poiana Neamtsului to Cabana Valea Sambetei. Intermediate nights were spent at Cabana Negoiu, Balea Lac, and Cabana Podragu. We probably only saw the sun for 20 minutes over the 5 days. There was some snow on the ground, lots of wind and cold weather, and the summit day, we were rained on all day long. However, it was a very enjoyable traverse despite the weather. I highly recommend that you stay in the cabins. They are welcoming, the prices are very reasonable, the cabin keepers speak good English and German and what better than a warm meal and a cold beer after a long hiking day! By staying at these cabins, you help support them as they are now privately owned and receive no support from the government. With many people staying in tents, the cabins have a hard time keeping up with even maintenance expenses and they are rapidly deteriorating, which is a real pitty.
