Interesting

Interesting to read. What also would be interesting to know is the mortality rate for guided climbs to the summit of Mont Blanc via the normal route (Goûter). I predict that that number is very small if not zero.

Re: Interesting

That would be interesting to know I agree, unfortunately I didn't find anything about it. I think one people died this year in Dome du Goûter. Better, I don't think, I know. But what I don't know if is he was guided...

thanks Paulo

I think it is easy to access. I did Mt. Blanc a few years back, one week later several people died - they were hiking in jeans, the weather changed and they got hypothermic. Mt. Blanc is so close to civilization, to tempting, but still challenging mountain.

Re: thanks Paulo

yes Liba, I think this is the main problem on Mont Blanc, and as you pointed yourself, unexperienced people on the mountain. Jeans, seriously? Damn this is absurd...
I also did Mont Blanc but I never saw something as disturbing as that...I saw some clear signs of inexperience but jeans...lol
Thanks for reading!
Best wishes
Paulo

Re: thanks Paulo

Thanks for the great post.
I did MB in 2006, helped out an Asian lady, who tried to put her crampons on upside down...Yes spikes facing sole...It was in Gouter, at 2am before starting the summit climb. During our 3 days climb 4 people died, a family roped before Gouter, and a tourist blown off to the glacier by the wind. We almost got hit by a huge rock kicked down by unexperienced "climbers" before Gouter, no shouting or making attention, what is coming...
You can see really absurd things up there. I will never ever climb anything popular as MB...the crowd is dangerous there...

Re: thanks Paulo

That's what I do, don't wanna expose myself on Aconcagua or anything like it...
Too many unexperienced people on high mountains is not good at all...

Wrong picture

I am sorry to tell that, but in the picture with the legend "The killer: Grand Couloir" we see the end of the ridge to Goûter hut and not the Grand Couloir. Grand Couloir is the snow pack close to Tête Rousse plateau, down left on the picture.

Re: Wrong picture

Well Macintosh I'll give you the credit for it, you're right on this one and I just changed the legend.
I'll even add one photo of the grand couloir. I know where the Grand Couloir is, trust me, I crossed it.
But what surprises me is that you didn't comment on anyhing else on the text, almost like you were looking for something wrong and found it.
Okay, cheers to you man!

nonsense

Paulo your article is nonsense, it is an example of how to attract attention and visibility by speaking about death and tragic deaths, an attitude much practiced by the worse kind of journalism, media and literature.
There is no constructive content in your article. It also shows you do not know how to read and present numbers, you completely fail to understand the meaning of statistics.
I do not want to start a discussion on this, suffice it to say that, according to your number of 0.15%, the probability of dying by climbing M.Blanc is lower, or similar, to the death probability associated with some very common behaviors, or exposures to common risks, like active smoking (higher), obesity, unintentional injuries, medical errors and hospital infections. Please keep in mind that only relative numbers matter in statistics, not absolute numbers, the fact that no Pygmy from Guinea ever died on M. Blanc does not mean they are good climbers.

Hmmm...
So you think I want "to attract attention and visibility by speaking about death and tragic deaths"???
Wow...Man, YOU DON'T KNOW ME AT ALL.
Yeah, okay...
Thank you anyway to speak up your mind and make all my work on the article seam useless.

Re: nonsense

...I said it is an example of that, I do not know you and your motivations. The article is useless to say the least, it would have been useful if you expained that climbing m. blanc can be safer than many things we usually do at home, if we do it with the proper training and preparation to the risks involved.

Re: nonsense

Ironic that 'as' seems to base much of his criticism on Paulo's supposed lack of knowledge of statistics, but then 'as' proceeds to make it clear he doesn't have a lick of understanding of the matter himself!

I suppose 'as' believes that if you spend 2-3 days smoking cigarettes that it is even more dangerous than 2-3 days climbing Mount Blanc? He is a fool- just blow him off Paulo.
