This...

...is epic. Provided a great many laughs at the beginning of my work day :) Will it get removed? Probably, but it is a well-written peak page nonetheless!

Thanks...

Some people can't take satire, I guess, but I'm glad to see there are some who do. I saw the page for Olympus Mons and it made me laugh so why not?

Cheers,

Eric

short shrift to the locals, as usual

You would have been accurate had you written "only one Westron party has been known to attempt any part of this route." Though there is no direct evidence that the forge at the top of the road has been used since before the Elrond-Isildur expedition, remote sensing (ref: P. Took, "What's a Palantir?") indicates that the road remains in excellent condition despite constant volcanic activity including earthquakes. Thus we can conclude it gets regular maintenance and probably is frequently traveled by local military patrols.

True, but...

As you say, the road is maintained as far as the Sammath Naur, but those patrols and road crews certainly aren't making any attempts on the summit, any more than the rangers and maintenance crews traveling the roads that access the base of Mt. Rainier, say. The activity maintained by local personnel is dangerous and extremely physical, so I'm not taking anything away from them. But the distinction remains.

As for the Mithrandir-led party, I'm not even sure they plan to bag the summit. They seem preoccupied with the Sammath Naur itself, and some of their party are practically kids with no mountaineering experience. I wouldn't be surprised if they lost a member or two before it's all over. Sad.

Awww....

C'mon guys...

I'm not a Lord of the Rings fan, thus my lack of a vote (initially- have since added one), but I see no harm in a page like this. It is well done, certainly a better writeup than most SP pages, and like the Olympus Mons page it is as worth a read as anything else.

Isn't cluttering or hurting anything. Should go back to being a Mountain Page, not a custom object.

Re: Awww....

The only difference is that Olympus Mons is a real mountain, while Mount Doom is fake.

Oops! Now all the people dressed like dwarves and elves are going to chase me for writing that!

I actually was quite entertained by the page. Very original.

Re: Awww....

I say it should be an article. Although yes it's fictional, it makes for a fun read and is still "a mountain". Thanks for sharing this page.

Love it!!

Have always been fearful of the mountain but your description puts me somewhat at ease. Disappointed about the lack of photos and summit log but,....
Is there a best season to climb, any good outfitters in the area??

Mixed Feelings

I saw this page this morning and thought, "Let's save this page by making it a custom object." No, I didn't change it, but I agree with the call. Hopefully, some of those who downvoted the page will now cancel their votes. We can disagree about this being a mountain page, but I think we can all live with it as a custom object. Plus, as mrchad9 already said, it's better than most mountain pages on this site, and fun to read.

And the author just submitted that very nice page for Ear Mountain in one of my favorite places, so I don't want to see him chased off!

10/10 for the page as a custom object; no vote as a mountain page.

And yes, I am a LOTR fan.

Thanks, Bob

I'm not too worried about whether it's a mountain page or a custom object...I guess it would get more views as a mountain but it's all good. I'm just glad you guys appreciate it.

Climb on,

Eric

:)

Nice to read about obscure peaks in lands we might not get to visit.

So spot on...

I love the whole thing. Please don't let anything happen to this article, it's the funniest thing I read in ages!

(off the cuff...)

Did you know about the mining concession granted to Freeport McMoran early in Denathors reign? Rights of way were granted them through Ithilien and they'd negotiated extensively with the kingdoms of the Harad. There are likely southern approaches, and with the construction of a pipeline for raw materials these would be most amenable to shipping.

Should remove disclaimer

If someone can't understand it's satire, let Darwin take it's course. Otherwise very well done

Have added the page to the Volcanoes on SP list http://www.summitpost.org/volcanoes-on-sp-complete-list/539564. Please let me know if you create any similar pages.
