Lousy Trip
I'm sure it's not a bad peak, but we had a rough trip. It was very smoky, over 80 degrees most of the day and took us 13.5 hours (my fault for bringing a new hiker). Also the mosquitos were a constant. I killed 98 of them during the day even though I was wearing deet. And on the drive out, I irreparably damaged the stock tire on my new Subaru when I hit a hidden rut in the road.

Confirming bigjoe's log. I have the gate at about 1.3 miles from the fishermans trail. My GPS gave me 4.7 miles one way to the summit from the gate. It felt like that. All told, 8 hours round trip. Beautiful, secluded peak and lake. Based on the summit register, i was the first this year.

Mount Fernow
There is a new gate on the logging road at 47.77171,-121.264751.
The gate is on the main road where a small spur heads SE and then SW. This is the first time the road reaches elevation 4560. This adds about a half hour of road walking in each direction. (It's just a tad over 7 miles, round trip, to the Fernow summit from the gate.) In addition, the final half mile of road has been plowed up and back-filled, so it's not the easiest walking. Very little bush whacking on the route.
Lots of steep terrain but this was still a fun short peak. Getting up and down 5403 and 5320 twice each was harder than the ascent from the lake to the summit in my opinion. Great views on a clear day.
Looking at maps and seeing the basic ridge approach from a distance, we thought the approach would be easier than the final ascent up the mountain. The opposite turned out to be true. Getting up and over Point 5403 safely was the "crux" of the trip. No major scrambling needed. Hands and poles needed.
A great peak, ascended with a great hiking partner (Eric). The 360-degree view from the summit was spectacular; a very unique vantage point for some major peaks nearby.
