I loved this hike (alum cave). Though the summit was not truly picture of the week worthy, the views were outstanding, and wandering around the lodge was pretty cool.
Fantastic up here. Krumholtz trees, the works. Climbed via Alum Caves Bluffs. Icy, though - a little freaky.
Well, hiked in a snow cloud, but it was still nice.
Solo trip, up Rainbow Falls trail in 2:30, down Alum Cave trail, back up Alum Cave Trail (1:30). Lunch at Cliff Tops, then a very slow descent down the Rainbow Falls trail. Great day! The Alum Cave trail was very busy, but I didn't see a soul until my first walk by the Lodge. Tagged the true summit on the second ascent of the day, just to make it official.
From the Alum Cave Route
Via the Alum Cave Trail... The trail was very icy in the dicey areas. Had to hold onto the cable tightly on the way up around 9 am... by the time we came down that afternoon luckily a good bit had melted... but not enough to keep my wife, myself, and just about everyone else we passed from taking a spill
with my husband and brother-in-law.
A nice easy hike with my wife and brother.
Arrived at Mount Leconte at 2pm after driving from Asheville. Reached the summit at 4pm by way of the Alum Caves trail. Got some candy from a very nice lady hiking down the trail. Ran over and checked out the other peaks; Cliff Top etc. Returned to the car by 5:30pm. A very enjoyable hike to finish out my extended weekend.
First summit of 2005. Had great conditions and sweet views from the top. Couldn't ask for anything else.
Brings back fond memories
In the winter, the shelter is one cold and windy place. Met some backpackers from Atlanta in shelter, freezing their butts off.
Well..this was a sort of a culmination of a long week in the Smokies....we had fun and met some wild and crazy people doing the AT...
GReat Day Hike. Ran into a Bear on the way down!
Climbed solo on my birthday in conjunction with Kephart and Charlies Bunion. Started at Newfound Gap and used Boulevard and AT. Quite a bit of snow on the trail and did not see a soul the entire day, extremely rare for the Smokies. As a bonus, saw 3 elk while driving out of the park towards Cherokee. A most excellent birthday.
My first solo hike to LeConte, I went up as a crew guest since I will be working on the mountain next season. I have hiked LeConte 4x now and everytime has something different to offer. I'm so blessed to have grown up here!!
Climbed once in the summer with my Dad and once in the winter with my little brother. I consider both 2 of my all time favorite hikes.
A scary Halloween climb.
The foliage at lower elevations was remarkable. The air was crisp and damp. Camped at the shelter near the summit. Great hike!
This was Jennifer's first Southern Sixer
First hike ever. Did this with my father and grandfather when I was four years old. I guess this is where I got hooked :) Don't really remember too much except that we ran into a couple of black bears and stayed at the shelter on top of the mountain and based on the pictures it has changed. Back then it was just the stone and chain link.
