These people don't believe in switchbacks... and I LOVE THAT!!:-) Coming from Colorado 14ers to this altitude, we were flying up this thing! It was great to not be huffing the usual:-) Fun hike- 2nd state highpoint:-)
Hiked up during some hurricane remnants. Didn't mind getting soaked.
Took the Hell Brook Trail most of the way. Nice and challenging, fun, and WET in the rainy weather. Very beautiful on the way up.
I have been up this mountain in four consecutive summers, from 2004-2007. I have always had great weather for it. I never really appreciated the magnitude of the mountain until I came up over the forehead on the Long Trail with a 30lb pack on my back. I had always come up from the north on the LT in previous years. Did it a 5th time with my wife, brother, mom, and dad on a vacation to Vermont in 2010. Went up Sunset Ridge Trail and down Laura Cowles Trail.
A fun day in the snow during a dry winter in Vermont. We even managed to pick up a hitchhiker in town and bring him up the mountain. Unfortunately, Craig twisted his ankle on the descent.
We wanted an easy short hike for the kids. My partner accidently picked the subway trail (a little harder than the other trails) and it turned out to be an awesome adventure. (One mom was in sandels & a skirt, but she's tough.) The kids were **delighted** by the pristine trail and fun caves. Loved the ladder. We had a great time. Couldn't have been more fun.
It was a really clear day. Our route started from the end of the Parking Lot of the Toll road up the Long Trail to the Chin. It's an easy class 2 which makes for a lot of fun.
Via a very steep trail on the NE side -- very slippery.
The Hell Brook Trail is aptly named. A lot of scrambles on wet slabs and an unrelenting grade until you reach the ridge… and what a ridge! Mansfield is a beautiful mountain. I hope to get back to Vermont more often.
Asended from Underhill State Park via the Laura Cowles trail and returned via Sunset Ridge. This is a great loop hike and descending Sunset Ridge allowed us to better enjoy the views out toward Lake Champlain an the Adirondacks
climbed up the hellbrook trail, beautiful weather, wish I could spend more time in Vermont
My dog Spanky and I made the summit via the long trail on a hot and hazy June day. For a complete report of our trip, pleae go to http://50summits.blogspot.com
At least 12 times... summer & winter
I think we hit the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory and Ben and Jerry's on the way back to the hotel. It guess it's a very well located mountain.
side trip to tag it during 1976 AT thru hike
Two unmitigated peak baggers would not be deterred by a little rain storm and hiked up to the summit anyway. I loved the whole area, Smugglers Notch very interesting in a "Headless Horseman" kinda way.
Although the summit can often be very crowded (with people and radio towers), the multitude of trails up the peak make it a blast to hike. Try the Halfway house to canyon trails for an exciting route to the top. Be ready to shed your pack though, and push it through the caverns you have to crawl through! Enjoy!
My wife and I enjoyed the hike to the top and back.
Did this highpoint with my wife and our 4 month old son. Great views from both sides of the mountain.
