2-day backpacking trip from Cottonwood.
day hike from cottonwood pass.
Traversed southern ridge from Joe Devel; fun Class 3-4 along the way. Onward to traverse to Newcomb.
Last of four peaks which included (in order) Newcomb, Chamberlin, Pickering, and Joe Devel. Up via Miter Basin from Soldier Lake and down Joe Devel's sandy south face.
Solo dayhike starting from Horseshoe Meadows. I left Upper Rock Creek and followed the Erin Lake drainage up until a little below the lake, then cut right to gain Pickering's SE ridge. Nothing more than Class 2 all the way. Traversed the ridge to Joe Devel afterwards.
We hiked up the Meysan Lakes Trail and camped the 1st night on a saddle above the lake on the ridge up to Irvine. Then we traversed over to Mallory and LeConte before going down a gully and camping below Pickering. The next day we climbed Pickering, Joe Devel and Chamberlin and then down to Crabtree Lakes. The following day we went from Crabtree to the JMT and and climbed up Discovery Pinnacle before going down the Whitney Trail.
Used SE ridge approach and finished on NE ridge. Then traversed to Joe Devel. Very little snow...felt like autumn.
In mid-September 1999, 4 of us went into Rock Creek Canyon for a 6-day peak bagging expedition. We set up our base camp along Rock Creek, below Erin Lake. As luck would have it, we got hit by the remnant of a hurricane, and it rained almost every day, with occasional hail and lighting. On the first clear day, we climbed Joe Devel via the east face, which is easy and straightforward class 2-3 talus with some sand near the top. From there we crossed the ridge to Pickering and descended the Pickering's SE Ridge. Both of these peaks are easy and both have spectacular views. We didn't encounter anyone else the entire time we were in the Rock Creek drainage.
Unmemorable traverse. Trip report
