Ventura & Kern
Easy walk up from primary trailhead. Started mid-afternoon as was coming from Burbank and made a couple stops along the way (including St. Francis Dam NM). Only 2-3 other vehicles in parking lot on weekday afternoon. Met 2 people on way up and once at the summit, saw 2 others coming up the road (though they turned around before the junction to the summit).
Continued on to Sawmill Mountain, attempting (and failing) to find the outcrop on Piños that is the potential Kern County high point on my way to the Sawmill summit. Few seemed to have continued to Sawmill from Piños as I do not recall if I saw bootprints. I bypassed one false summit before making my way to the massive cairn marking the Sawmill summit. On my return trip it was easier to more readily identify the outcrop on Piños -- I think. I did not have coordinates, so I did my best, lest it is discovered to be higher than the Sawmill summit and I would have to return. Back to vehicle with an hour of daylight remaining.

Snowy Pinos
I originally planed to hike the Vincent Tumamait trail from Cerro Noroeste, but the road to Cerro Noroeste was closed. So I drove to the end of the Mt. Pinos road and hike/postholed to Mt. Pinos and Sawmill Mountain.
Before planning the trip I checked the NOAA estimated snowfall depth, and did not see any snow, so I thought the hike would be free of snow in light of the very hot weather recently in SoCal. Big mistake. The snow was 1-3 feet deep throughout. Looking at it more closely now, I see that the amount was actually, apparently, "not estimated," so that probably should have clued me in. The snow was not much of a problem on the way to Sawmill, but the way back was challenging as the snow became soft. Still it was a grand adventure for me as it was my first real hike through snow.
Views were superb, with the spires of the Sierra Nevada clearly visible from the summits of both mountains.

27 Peaks in 21 Days
This was the first peak of a 21 day hiking road-trip with Heather. Pinos was a rather boring hike to be honest. We also did:
Sawmill, Aliso, Signal, Castle Dome, Ajo, Miller, Superstition BM, Turtle HP, Old Woman, Granite, Cinder Cone 3894', Avawatz, Pahrump, Pinto, Nelson HP, Panamint Butte, Canyon Point, Shadow, Grapevine, Wahguye, Palmer, Stirling, Northshore, Black Mesa, Hamblin, and Little Virgin.
We also visited Heiroglyph Canyon, Marble Canyon, Cottonwood Canyon, Sheep Spring Canyon, Cadiz Dunes, Mojave Lava Tube, Parowan Gap Dinosaur tracks and numerous pertroglyph sites.

Warm up for Big Pine
Was heading down to Maricopa to spend the night before Big Pine Mountain the next day, decided to leave a few hours early and visit Pinos and Sawmill, with a little Grouse thrown in for fun. Easy hike, and surprisingly beautiful weather on the mountain while the lowlands baked in 100+ degree heat. TR is HERE.

Clear Day
The forecast had said 2" of snow but instead it was clear and sunny with scattered remnant snow patches. No-one in the parking lot and no way to pay for the adventure pass.
Beautiful mountain, showing some character of the Sierras further north..

Mt. Pinos to Sawmill to Grouse Mountain
Beautiful day, excellent walk. 9 miles, 2500 ft. Elevation gain. Blessed my day at the Chumash prayer tower, with Buddhist prayer flags and all. Quite a rock cairn marking the summit of Sawmill. Grouse Mountain summit cairn is hard to find. It is in the pines. Mt. Pinos summit marker is over by the radio tower.

Mt. Pinos to Sawmill Mountain
From the Nordic Base parking lot, I hiked over Pinos to Sawmill Mountain on May 23, 2013, starting around noon. No snow, beautiful weather. Temperatures 62 to 65 in the sun, 55 degrees in the shade. Cool winds about 3 to 5 mph off the marine layer below, over the valleys. Blue sky above with chilly gusts up to 15 to 20 mph at times. Made for a brisk 4 hour, 7 mile hike above 8000 feet. Good preparation for moving up in elevation. 10,000 feet is next....

Mt Pinos - Sawmill
Hiked this along with Sawmill last Saturday. Was planning to add Grouse as well, but missed the turn & ended up just adding several miles through the forest. It was a beautiful day with only a little snow left. Once I got past Mt Pinos summit, I didn't see anyone until the return trip between Pinos & Sawmill.
