Worm Flows  Sucess!

Skinned until I wasn't getting good purchase even with ski crampons. Put the skis on my pack and booted up from there. Fun walk over to the true summit and a great run all the way back down.

Last weekend in the PNW  Sucess!

Climbed via the worm flows route with Maddie. It was the sunniest and warmest day of the year so far, which made for a slushy descent. Views up top were worth it though. Now off to the desert again!

Worm Flows  Sucess!

I underestimated both how hard this would be, and how much I'd enjoy it. It was awesome. Trip report here.

Worm Flows  Sucess!

Great Outing! First snow climb for Michelle and I. Boots and crampons felt great. Summited in 5:30 hours, 8:45 hours car to car. Deep snow for the entirety.

A much shorter trip down  Sucess!

Hauled the Lib Tech to the top, which took way too long, but I think we made it from the summit to the car in about 45 minutes. The snow was pretty good, especially at the top. Smooth and fresh cascade June "powder". 1997 was a good year.

Quick trip  Sucess!

Climbed too quick and too early, waited around from 4:30 until daylight approximately 300ft below the crater cornice. Socked in summit, great glissading and break in between the clouds.

Torn ACL brutal climb  Sucess!

Climbed this mountain with a torn ACL. It sucked limping up and down. But cool place.

Dressed for success  Sucess!

Via Worm Flows (winter route). Patchy snow started ~3 miles from Marble Mtn Sno-Park lot. Day started overcast & misty, then gusty winds. Eventually, clear blue sky and perfect temperatures for climbing. Obvious evidence of recent large slides, but excellent snow consolidation. A plethora of glissade trenches beckoned, but most were too soft to be usable, making descent VERY slow. Great Mother's Day for our party of 3 (Lovell Travis, Jared McCaleb (age 13; his first climb) and I.

Mother's Day weekend, in a dress  Sucess!

From Marble Mtn campground, hiked up carrying skis on back to the weather tower on Monitor Ridge, skinned up the rest to climber's right. Hung out up top in a purty dress for a hour or so, then had some awesome spring turns down the Worm Flows on the way out. Gorgeous weather (almost too hot), tons of people, but fun

Actual summit  Sucess!

Third ski trip to St. Helens, finally walked over to the true summit. Actually kind of a cool ridge and nice views.

Great Success  Sucess!

Cale & I left the parking lot mid-morning, smooth uneventful skin up, skied down to the setting sun, hiked out the icy single-track in the dark. Just a few other folks out there that day.

Great Success  Sucess!

Cale, Pat & I set up camp around dusk after a late afternoon skin to just below treeline. Chilled next morning before continuing, icy final slope, could've waited for softer snow and better turns but still pretty good. More hikers than skiers that day.

Had to wait for the view  Sucess!

The top was fogged out, spent a couple of hours hiking around the rim waiting for the view. Finally got to see the crater and the dome inside is pretty impressive.

DogsHead with 149 others  Sucess!

Climbed Mt St. Helens at 14 while qualifying for the Mountaineers Climbing Course. It was an early Saturday start with nearly 150 people. Somehow I was on the one two-man rope team. We ascended the DogsHead unroped but with crampons, then onto the crater rim and summit roped up. The most memorable was the sun coming up from very first light, and the tremendous glissade down the DogsHead in midday corn snow.

Great climb  Sucess!

Started our ascent at 7am from Marble Mountain snopark. It took about 45 minutes to get through the forest until it opened up. The trail steepens as you make your way to the start of the boulder field. The snow level was high up the mountain this year so the boulder field was much more rough. This route is called "Worm Flows" and doesn't require a permit from Nov-Apr 1st. You do have to fill out a free climbing pass at the trail head if you'll be traveling above 4800ft. After the boulder field you'll want to put on the crampons as it gets pretty steep. It's mind over matter at this point and you just have to follow other footprints to the top. The summit is gorgeous! Looking into the aftermath of the 1980 eruption is very surreal. Take some photos and get a bite to eat but don't spend too much time at the top as you still have to get down. The way down is much quicker since you can "glissade" slide on your rear back down to the boulder field. All in all, the whole trip should take about 8 hours for a person in decent shape. A bit less in summer since snow slows you down. It's a great climb for a beginner but will push you to your limits!!!
