Parts of the east ridge route are clogged with scrub growth after heavy winter rains. Evening views south were nice but I have one more to do tonight, so off to Barley Flats.
Perfect weather and beautiful views over the eastern range and southern canyons. The use trail is getting a bit overgrown with yucca and thorny brush in parts, and it was a shame to find a shotgun shell and lots of broken glass on the first "hump."
Hiked up the east ridge from the Angeles Crest highway. High clouds above and fog below led for perfect viewing conditions. It was the first of what was supposed to be a long day of peak-bagging along the Angeles Crest. After another short hike to the top of nearby Peak 5,420, however, I foolishly drove my low-clearance vehicle onto the the Mount Mooney Road and got stuck in the dirt. The fall-out from that led to a hiatus from peak-bagging. Hopefully that hiatus will end soon.
After Strawberry-Lawlor. Quick scramble from the parking area at MP45. Enjoyed an hour-long picnic in the shade afterwards. Summit has surprisingly nice views. New register placed on 4/12/17.
I didn't really research this hike, just pulled over along the highway and found what looked like a doable route. Ended up being a pretty crappy scramble and in hindsight I would've done it differently. After pushing through dense brush I ended up on the ridge where there was a nice trail to the summit. The other day I was looking at Mount Sally from Vetter Mountain and noticed that there is a nice use trail along the east ridge so I would probably just go up from there next time.
Last summit for the day before having to drive back home. Thought it was going to be quick, but actually took some huffing and puffing up the east ridge to summit. Surprisingly good views in all directions. And was the only peak (beside Lewis and Mooney) that actually had a register. Good end to an easy day.
Bagged along with Vetter and Mooney
can't remember the exact date, but linked with lawlor, deception, disappointment, and.....ugh?????
HOT day of peakbagging including Twin Peaks, Akawie, Winston Peak, Winston Ridge, Mt. Mooney, & Mt. Sally. Pretty nice views from the top of this one.
Hunted for lizards on the way to/from the summit with my dad. No catches.
Climbed Sally and Vetter on this hot morning! It was then time for a cold beer at Newcomb's!
I climbed the wrong peak the first time I tried this earlier in the year. Came back with Ryan to tag this with Barley Flats. Trip Report
Climbed Mount Williamson, Mt. Akawie, Winston Peak, Mount Mooney and finally Mount Sally. Short climb to Sally from SR2.
Tagged Mt. Williamson first, then Mt. Akawie, Winston Peak, Mt. Mooney, and finally Mt Sally.
Nice views to the north, every other direction was obstructed by clouds.
Part of a three peak day with my 11 year old. Have been here before, we built a replica of Stonehenge on top.
Climbed 8 HPS this day: San Gabriel, Disappointment, Markham, Occidental, Wilson, Lowe, Barley Flats, Sally. Better planning and someone could easily climb 15-20.
Beautiful little morning on Sally. Went onto Mooney and then to my first trip to Mount Williamson. Lots of snow that day.
I went up the west ridge to the summit (no register)and hiked down the east ridge for a bit. Beautiful day and great views. Baldy still with snow-amazing.
