My first ascent with the mountain dry. A beautiful day with the expected crowd at the top.

From Manker Flat
Drove down from the Bay Area for a conference in Palm Springs - after visiting the downtown LA library I drove up to Manker Flat and hiked up to the ski lodge and took the Devil's Backbone trail up to Baldy with a side visit to West Baldy and Harwood on a fine afternoon. Barely any snow to be found anywhere, and none on the trail. Trip report is HERE.

Fun and Fast
3rd time up, but the first time not taking the Devil's Backbone. Althougth a bit steeper, it is definately more scenic.

Great Nite Hike
SEEING TRAILS HIKE GANG full-moon-lunar-eclipse night hike. Went up via Baldy Bowl trail, reached the summit, traversed the Devil's Backbone and came down the Baldy Notch trail. Very windy and exposed on the summit. Lots of fun.

Night Hike
Started hiking at 9pm to break in new mountaineering shoes and train for another hike. Brought up the jet boil and made hot chocolate at the top and saw all the city lights and stars above. Awesome experience.
Done it a half dozen times or so in the past few years, via Ski Hut, Devil's Backbone and Bear Canyon. The last one is my favorite since there are so few people on it.

Great PlaceI've been up twice, once during a dry January and again the same Summer. Lovely hiking, with some amazing flora and fauna. Watch for bighorns!

Sunset Hike: Manker Loop (Ski Hut to Backbone).Ski Hut is 100% snow free all the way up. A few patches of snow off the north of the summit can be used to replenish water supply>
Still breezy and cool. Perfect hiking weather. Cold at night.
The Pleiades and Orion guarded the west while Ares and The Lion domineered the east. Love the stars...
