Lost my CO 14er virginity on Mt. Shavano 2 days after arriving in Colorado for my permanent move here. Finally reconnected with my Aconcagua partner and good friend Dirk for a fun-filled extravaganza week. We went from Blank Gulch trailhead; very windy on summit. On the way down we saw 5-10 bighorn sheep (~10,000 ft.) and able to get fairly close for pictures. Very cool. Headed into Buena Vista for some outstanding mushroom burgers and then to Cottonwood hot springs. Bivied in the nearby national forest, with so many stars and satellites.
Did with Eric, from Blank Gulch. Beautiful day up there, although the forest fire a couple drainages down was strange. Mind-blowing descent. We saw some bighorn sheep, which was very cool.
climbed and glissaded what was left of the Angel.
Five 12-15 year olds and 2 instructors from Telluride Academy. Standard Route from Angel Campground.
Went up via the Angel.. lots of fun!
First peak of the day, a simple hike up. Was treated to a lovely sunrise at treeline. Headed off to Tab, Antero, and Princeton after.
5+ hours car-to-car.
Started up Shavano trail, traversed at 11,950' to Shavano Lake. Then up to the head of the valley with a few easy Class 3 moves to avoid rotten snow. Descended via Shavano trail. Herd of bighorn sheep and a few ptarmigan above the lake.
hauled my snowboard to ride the sun cupped angel. summited and bounced down.
The 2nd summit of Shavano on the return from Tabeguache was a little discouraging. When the storms started moving in that was all the motivation I needed to git r done.
Hiked all four from the Shavano/Tabeguache Trailhead. Great views of Mount Ouray, Taylor Mountain, and Mount Aetna.
Started from the Angel CG up the CT. CT was mostly snow free, didn't start skinning til 10400ft. Snow was nicely consolidated, above treeline it was all windblown powder til near the top where the surface became wind/sun crust(unskinnable). Left skis at the top of the left arm(climbers right) as snow is not continuous from the summit. Ended up skiing the head for better turns, 4" wind blown powder in the lower body made for nice turns. Blank Gulch TH should be open soon.
I hiked the two peaks in the afternoon with a sweet friend, nice sunset and cool, clean air...
This was my fifth climb of Shavano. We also did the traverse to Tabeguache.
This was my first climb of Shavano. I did it from Jennings Creek (before that route was closed)and got Tabeguache at the same time.
Great semi-loop hike
Started from just past Browns Lake and hit up Tab first, then over to Shavano. I liked this route much more than the standard.
Meant to do both Shavano and Tabeguache, but only bagged Shavano. Nice hike. Will have to Tabeguache in 2008.
Beautiful weather and great trail conditions - 1st on summit for the day!
Long trail. A nice day, we had a scare after making Tabaguache with lightning while trying to make it back over Shavano. Nice trail, good views to the South.
