I have climbed this peak 4 times. It is a perfect intermediate hike to prepare for things like St. Helens. The Haystack at the top is a perfect scramble, even if there is always about 10 people on it.
My first summer in Seattle I hiked this with friends at work. When they saw the Haystack, they said, "No, thanks." I then had to politely excuse myself and solo it.
A lovely hike, though a bit repetitive. Coming out of the tree line was a magnificent experience. Wonderful 1/4-1/2 day hike.
Scrambled to the top on the east face with y brother and sister, awesome rock and good trail with great views of Rainier and North Bend!
It was a good climb, but I should have brought a jacket, the weather at the top can be unpredictable.
Here's a video of the climb
Beautiful day in the NW. Snow and ice @ 1200 feet all the way up, but with some microspikes, you'll be cruising!
Successful hike up to the summit of the Haystack
got off the haystack with 2 minutes of daylight to spare
everything was quite wet
Day hike with TONS of other folks on the trail.
another one of my hacked and deleted summitlogs. With Steve Harrison in dry fluffy snow. Nice workout mountain but don't expect a solitary experience.
Hiked this as a training hike, should have found a training hike for this one.
Couldn't climb the spire to reach the summit due to heavy snow on the rocks and cold temps. No visibility but short and sweet for Thanksgiving.
Car to car in 5hrs - got up early and beat the heat / lot of other people to the top. Haystack scramble was fun - was able to get down before a congo line of people going up / coming down started as well. Bluebird day
30 pound pack. 1hr 45min up. just about the same down. Oh knees, why do I do this to you?
45-pound pack + new mountaineering boots, so it took much longer than expected.
Decent day, only a little precipitation toward the top. Visibility low however.
Training. Didn't do Haystack, it was getting late and I was solo
Several times but not recently. Once in the snow.
Hiked Mt. Si and the Haystack on an unseasonably warm, clear April day. Beautiful views all around, but certainly very crwded. The Haystack was a surprisingly fun, challenging scramble. I would never want to touch it if the rocks were wet.
