Lodgepole  Sucess!

I really enjoyed the scenery and views on this hike once we got out of the trees and onto the slabs. Hardly any snow at all so no need for any traction devices. Fun climb!

Great weekend  Sucess!

Hiked up to Silliman Lake the first day, camping out on the snow. Summited and hiked back the next morning. Watch out for the marmot that ripped into my buddy's backpack and my tent to eat our food while we were on the summit!

Fall Dayhike  Sucess!

Via Silliman Creek, the friction slabs, and Silliman Lake. An early winter storm about 1 week before my trip left things snowy and glorious. The gully was a little too steep to hike without crampons so I climbed the easy class 2 south slope to the summit ridge. Down-climbing the friction slabs was somewhat slow-going since all the rock was wet with snowmelt. Between the cross-country approach, 2,000 feet of sustained climbing on granite friction slabs, remote alpine lakes, and class 2 summit push this trip was a blast!

Three feet of snow two days before the hike made it imposible for us to even get close to granit slabs... This was my 2nd attempt. The first attempt was on November 6th, but the weather suddenly changed and went all bad. While I was going up the granit slabs half of an inch of slush accumulated on the granit slabs which was just pure joy going down!

Planning to do a 3rd and hopefully last attempt in September

via Silliman Creek  Sucess!

Beautiful solo day hike from Lodgepole Campground. Followed the standard trail up towards Twin Lakes to about 7,500' where the trail crosses Silliman Creek. Followed a use trail up to the friction slabs, then up to Silliman Lake. Had lunch, then up to unnamed lake at 10,400'. From here straight up tp summit. Beautiful views. Next Silliman summit will be across the tablelands from Moose Lake.

South Slope  Sucess!

Snowshoed up from Lodgepole, snowcamped at 9300'.

Beautiful weather, great views. Summit register needs a new notebook.

Also did this one in December 2005.

2nd Attemp  Sucess!

When you reach your turn around time... you've reached your turn around time. Exhaustion after 7 hours up meant that last 150' was not going to happen. At least I have an excuse to go back now.

UPDATE May 11, 2010

Well, I went back. Took a buddy too. We made on a prefectly epic day. 6.5 hours to the top. Great views.

So Close

Was on a trek with Boy Scouts, and I hiked from Twin Lakes right to the foot of Silliman at Little Lakes and took pictures of the route to show to the leaders to see if they would let me hike it.... and they said no... What a mountain, I will be back.

South Slope (day hike)  Sucess!

I climbed Mt. Silliman solo via south slope starting from Wuksachi Lodge. It was a great day moving on generally nice snow conditions. The views to the big mountains to the east were impressive.

Lodgepole day hike  Sucess!

2nd attempt, and it was much easier than the first! Teamed up with two friends and Vladislav. Great day. Discontinuous snow in the woods, we went up the exposed slabs and down the snow in great standing glissades.

Was told by a ranger to continue the (very buggy) trail past the Silliman Lake valley to the valley that contains the Little Lakes and approach Silliman from there. Got up the glacier chute to the ridge but ran out of both ridge and time (would have to go down to go up, and I gave up). Returned down the Silliman lake valley. Beatiful primeval place.

Made it up with nice folks from the Sierra Club. Couldn't have done it without them.
