A fun but very hot group hike. Arrived at the summit only to be chased away by hordes of gnats. Awesome peak.
I have admired this peak from a distance for years. It was a joy to finally visit this summit. The views are truly jaw dropping. The wind that day was pretty amazing, too, and also the 84 year old fellow summitting the peak with us, hiking like a 30 year old. I LOVE these fit southern AZ retirees!
My first southern AZ hike (on a nice day anyway), and I was quite impressed! It was in the 30s/40s the entire way up, with a few small patches of snow on the ground and ice in the pines. Besides being a bit hazy, summit views were perfect. Felt easier to hike than the 4000' gain would have you believe!
A perfect day - 103 in Tucson and about 70 on the top of Wrightson when we summited. Took our time and about 60 pics - 4 hrs up and 2 1/2 hrs down. My all time favorite in south AZ.
A nice amount of ice made for a small challenge near the peak...Old Baldy.
Old Baldy Super Trail Loop, got stormed on most the way.
A spectacular hike. My favorite in Arizona so far. I started early and was in shade all day. Wildflowers and wildlife were abundant, I saw 5 deer on the trail. Round trip, taking my time and lots of pictures, took me 5.5 hours. Great hike!
Hiked from Gardner Canyon with my family, the Jones family,
and Edward Earl. Jane was a bit under motivated, but
finally sped up when we spied the top.
I'd been up a couple times before in 1970+-.
Good views from sharp, bald top.
Great climb... this was actually my third attempt (first time I had footwear problems, the second time I was sick and just out for the day). A bit hot starting out but it was pleasant at the summit. Annoyingly buggy the whole way up.
Great day hike and escape from the heat below. Lots of bugs aruond Old Baldy Saddle, but suspect that won't last for too much longer
With Bill Bens and Rick Hartman, we went up the old Baldy trail. I really enjoyed this one and it could easily become my favorite in Arizona.
A wonderful place. The north and east side had a lot of snow, and I saw a large line of turkeys about half way up.
Climbed this in 1998. Did it several other times...in snow, and in heat! A classic summit in Southern AZ!
Took the Super Trail to Josephine Saddle and then the Old Baldy trail for the rest of the way as well as down. A very pleasant hike and the grade is fairly gentle the whole way. Very expansive views from the summit.
This is a great hike on a fabulous trail. Lots of switchbacks near the summit. Fantastic views in all directions.
Monsoons started early this year, so the hike from the trailhead to Old Baldy Saddle was hot and steamy. Paused at the saddle to wring out my hat, hankie and shirt, then zig-zagged up the switchbacks to the top and cool breezes. The tremendous view opened up on several thunderstorm cells with the potential to come my way, so I didn't linger. Roundtrip time: 5 hours.
Are the Wrightson trails open to the summit now? Since I've moved out of Tucson it's harder to keep up with the news. If they are I'll make a note on the page.
Sorry I didn't see your note until now. At the time of my hike, last summer, Old Baldy was the only trail open to Wrightson. The "Florida" fire did a real number on the others, particularly the route from Gardner Canyon.
Climbed this big guy in 1998 from the west via Super/Old Baldy trails. Very hot day - over 100 back at TH afterwards, 115+ in deserts. Yikes! Second time went with my wife via Gardner Canyon to the east. Just beautiful. One of AZ's finest overall peaks.
