Actually, Shining Rock is not that far away from John Rock/Looking Glass Rock.. You can see the highlands of the Shining Rock area plainly from the cliffs of John Rock if the clouds are not obscuring the view. Some of the best views of Looking Glass Rock are from the high country near Shining Rock Wilderness, along the Mountains to the Sea Trail.
Looking Glass sure overshadowed this one, so without visiting one would not likeley be aware of JR. The tarps seen to be popular in the warmer weather. JR has good crags in its own right.

Very close to Looking Glass Rock. You pass the trailhead for Looking Glass to get to John Rock. In the parking lot at the fish hatchery.

Too bad it was a hazy, rainy day, but it seems like North Carolina is normally like that!
You need to add some information about the route - elevation gain, hiking distance (2 hour hike, half a day?)
