I enjoyed reading about your hike to the summit of this seldom visited peak. I am always curious to see those kinds of sights in areas that are off the beaten track. I usually stick to the trails, but I sometimes go cross country; usually in the winter desert of Big Bend. Have you ever seen a bear in the backcountry of GUMO? I have not.
Thanks for your kind words about my Shumard Peak page. It was a joy to visit this summit and the prickly cross-country ascent indeed ensures relatively few feet visit the top. I saw no bear during my visit to the Guadalupes. It was beautiful, but very cold during my stay. I long to return to Big Bend - it's been probably 15 years since my last visit!
