Very nice page, and not far from Sacramento! Despite the restrictions I am tempted in check it out. Lately, the desert peaks of Nevada have interested me.
Does anyone know if the Cottonwood Canyon road, out of Walker Lake (town) is open again? Surgent used it before 9/11, and it seems to reduce the hike a lot.
The army won't let anyone other than military personel use that route. A couple of my friends have tried (recently) and were denied. That is why some of us looked for another way in. I just went that way a week ago. Here's a trip report from some that did one year ago. Trip Report.
