Did this with my son, who was 4 years old at the time. Route from Red Rocks trail head is definitely more interesting.

Sweet Short Training Hike
This trail is ideal for training and for hiking with children. On a clear day you can see Denver. The summit also offers a nice view of Pikes Peak and the Air Force Academy Chapel.
