Thanks for taking the time to post this report. I'm hoping to make the same dayhike in July. It lets me know that Lyell is doable as a day hike, as long as you start early.
Have fun and let me know how it goes. It is a LONG dayhike, but doable. Hopefully the California wild fires will die down before you go, otherwise it may be smokey.
