any 'lost airmen' this year. Too much snow!
But keep looking - stranger things have happened!
Uhhh....beg to differ. The glacier has receeded pretty far. Even Ice Nine is out more than half its shape.
Mendel Glacier hike/search for WWII aviators
Coming Aug. 31 from
THE FRESNO BEE
Central California's Leading Newspaper
“Lost Flights: The Sierra’s deadly legacy,” a series of print stories and online reports by The Bee's Mark Grossi and Cyndee Fontana.
Come with us Aug. 31-Sept. 17 and relive the stories of doomed flights. Examine the Sierra’s dangerous terrain and weather. Learn why there are so many crashes and why it's so difficult to recover lost planes.
In the center of the series, Grossi and photographer Mark Crosse will bring the Sierra front and center when they hike to Mendel Glacier in search of the remains of airmen who were lost on a training flight in 1942. Join them as they blog live from the mountain.
The series will package stories, photos, maps, charts, videos, audio clips and blogs for an in-depth review of Sierra plane crashes.
You can join the journey now; enjoy early blogs, galleries and more at http://www.fresnobee.com/lostflights/.
Be sure to bookmark the page so that you can keep up with the series as it unfolds in print and online Aug. 31 through Sept. 17, only in

YES! This was one of the better quality climbs we've had in the Sierra. The descent was total bullshit but the climb was well worth it. Thanks Carolyn; hope all is well with you up at your end. )
What way do people usually descend? Isn't there
a way to descend northward towards Piute Pass,
or do most take the col back down to Sabrina??
GEEZ, no wonder you guys/gals are staying in
shape! Some incredible country, definitely.
We slogged down the east face of Mendel - absolute BULLSHIT scree and Class 3 downclimbing. Seemed more technical than the Class 4/5 ascent! :)
Always gotta love those "pop-up" advertisements
in search of lost airmen. Deb, do your photos
ALWAYS attract this much attention? Awesome!

Yeah, what the hell was THAT? I am not very commercial so this is a new one on me. :)
Well, some things are better left a MYSTERY.
"You don't pull on Superman's cape,
You don't spit into the wind,
You don't pull the mask off of Old Lone Ranger,
And you don't mess around ... "
With the lost airmen.
Although you may have climbed the NE ridge, the photo is of the NW ridge.
