Tongariro Circuit
Wonderful 3 night trip along Tongariro Circuit...got to relax and take in all the beauty. Got lucky with a break in bad weather on the summit allowing for some amazing views.

Feral scramble
I made a game of catching up to and passing as many people as I could on this pretty, but overcrowded side trip. Made it up in under 25 minutes, but my heart was about to give out.
Stick to the rib up and scree ski that on the way down! So fun with boots.

Up from Crossing route
I made the mistake of heading straight up the broad, steep, and *very loose* scoria slopes above the Mangatepopo saddle. Should have stuck to the relative solidity of the minor rock rib to climber's left. The descent, however, was delightful: 600m in 5 min.

Bonza
Headed up during a rare clear day, mainly via the lava ridges on the northern side. Headed round the outer rim first getting some mega views down to the plains, Tama Lakes and Ruapehu. Then up and round the inner crater rim. Some snow and rime ice contrasted the red rocks perfectly. The whole structure is just beautiful. First passed by this volcano over a decade previously and finally had a chance to head on up. Great day.

Side trip on crossing
Awesome area . . . I agree with the page authors advice and would avoid doing this peak on a crossing facilitated by a local operator. The 7.5 h a lofted made for a pretty rushed day.
Climbed this and Mt. Tongariro in addition to completing the crossing.

slog
wish I'd had gaitors. Lots of vocanic rock in my low top boots. Really hot. Probably a better winter option.

Must be better in winter
Started from Whakepapa chateau at 9am, pass by Taranaki Falls along the loop, then Northern Circuit to Mangatepopo shelter, circumambulate Mt Doom's crater rim, Tongariro and finished the Crossing at Ketetahi in the dark at about 8pm. Very unique terrain owing to the Emerald Lakes and Blue Lake. Ngauruhoe a bit of a slog by itself, though.

Good Climb
Hard climbing with the full pack, but made the summit eventually. Clear blue sky all day could see all the way to Taranaki. Had to stay on the rock ridge since so many boulders were flying down the snow from other climbers. Great climb and worth all the effort. My first New Zealand summit!
But no bad luck here. In fact the bad luck was earlier when I'd bailed in a wind/rainstorm the previous day on the Mangatepopo Saddle.
Managed to avoid a lot of the volcanic sand on the way up by sticking to friendlier rock ribs.
Views limited on top but superb lower down.
Ran down the scree to the saddle in ~45 mins coming down and back at the car 2 hours later. About 8 hours return with lots of breaks and an hour on top.
Super day!

Beautiful cone
Enjoyable scramble up a scree slope/rib as part of the Tongariro crossing. Brilliant scree run back down - takes no time at all and saves your knees!

Busy
Following a slog up volcanic rubble at or nearly at its angle of repose, this was a rather crowded mountain up top.

Foiled by volcanic hazards...
Climbed up snowy scree slopes from Mangatepopo saddle to the crater, where noxious fumes from vents blocked access to the true summit. Took a safer route to the crater rim and marvelled at the volcanic features that foiled my summit attempt.
