Hey SummitJunkie,
The gradual altitude gain made a big difference. I'm a flatlander and really wanted to make sure my sons first 14'r was a fun event. The altitude can ruin a trip fast. This route was both challenging and fun.
Good Luck!

Ya! We'd planned to hike Mt. White a few weeks earlier as a workup and I'd noticed he couldn't get his gear pack in his pack. He'd broken his arm on Wednesday and didn't want to tell his mom cause he knew we were going hiking! On Friday, after seeing his arm, we head to the emergency room and came home with a cast. Happily the doc gave him the OK for Whitney in a few weeks.
He broke the other arm 2 months later!;-)
Kids! They are tougher than we think.
Derek
until my kids are old enough to do this. Only a few more years! Great story. I can relate to the morning issue stuff. My girl is only 9 and she's already getting that way.
Rob,
Thanks. Scouting has it's own rewards. We have a lot of kids that would never have gotten outdoors if it wasn't for scouting. I grew un in Northern Canada where we were all very outdoor types. A lot of these city kids never get that chance. It's great to see the kids gain confidence and competence in the outdoors.
Enjoy! Derek
Awesome. There is nothing like sharing your passion of the mountains with your son. When my boy was 11, I took him to Langely via Cottonwood lakes, a perfect beginner hike and climb (although he pooped out at Army pass). Two years ago I had him up on Shasta on Cascade Gulch. He actually fell asleep on the glacier during the climb, he was so worn out. This year we're headed up to Williamson and Tyndall. Now that he's started high school and is into sports, he's in much better physical condition, so I think he'll be less fatigued. I can see it now... he'll be dropping me like a stone. Anyway, good for you and your son. Those are memories he will carry with him for the rest of his life, as you will also.
Congrats on Williamson! That looked like a real beast of a climb from the top of Tyndall. I'm hoping to give it a try next year now that my son is nearly as tall as me and has packed another 40 pounds on his frame since Whitney. I agree, he'll be leaving me in the me in the dust soon as well. Loved San Diego! Lived in La Mesa for many years and graduated UCSD. Still go see mom in Poway 4 times a year. It's a rough place to live! lol

My dad took me hiking up Katahdin to get me started at age 10 (and little brother at age 6!) Two years later we did some overnighters up there. Hikes were the only reason I remained a Boy Scout for several years. Good memories brought about by your report.
Woodie,
Just start them early. I had my kids out at 3 and 4. Unfortunately, my daughter turned very girlie when she hit 14 and her former love of hiking with dad now elicits the response... Eeewwww! Regardless, I'll treasure those few years.
You enthusiasm will be contageous. You'll never get too old for ths mountains. It keeps me alive.
Keep on hikin!

Hi Derek and Dan. We climbed North Rib of Tyndall partly because of seeing your trip report and photos! My son Daniel had just celebrated his 15th B-Day, but young is young. We kept saying "if a kid with a broken arm can climb this Rib, then so can we! And, we did.
thanks. (You can see our trip report under Mt tyndall too)
Best wishes Matt Karr
I'm really glad you enjoyed the trip. It is both challenging and rewarding, but not to tough for a youngster. The views were amazing. Congratulations to your and your son on making it up Mt. Tyndall. A few sections of that North Rib can be a little spooky as son exclaimed. Look like you've got a great life long climbing partner!
