Mt. Whitney

The Smithsonian Institution erected this stone shelter for astronomers in 1909. No longer used by astronomers, this simple stone hut now provides shelter for hikers. Equipped with a lightning arrest system, climbers may be safe inside during violent thunderstorms. After several hours on the highest mountain the in lower 48, I returned to main trail, retrieved my pack, and began the descent to Whitney Portal.
