Ned Hill

Ned Hill

The fire lookout at the summit of Ned Hill, which as of 2012 was one of the shrinking number of old fire lookouts in Washington. The old fire lookout still standing at the summit of Ned Hill is a platform type, not a cabin type. This fire lookout has the appearance like it came straight out of Tarzan, Robinson Crusoe, or Gilligan's Island. Most platform fire lookouts in Washington have fallen down or been demolished. Probably the main reason this fire lookout is still standing is because trees are growing all around the tower, protecting it from direct winds. It probably also helps that this peak is lowland and on the usually drier side of the Olympic Peninsula, meaning less snowpack accumulates and weighs down the wooden planks and poles of the structure.
