I was there in July -- so when I saw "had heard that Saddleback via the AT was a great hike" I grinned. I spent my time below timberline on various long jumps and maneuvers to avoid soakers and face plants in the mud. I haven't lived out east for 26 years, but occasional visits refresh my memory of why the AT can be so tiring.
Yup...it WAS A great hike...but, the mud was wicked and pretty constant...even in some places above treeline. Luckily, a lot of this was frozen on our way UP...but, not so lucky on the way down. I guess I really DO need a pair of gators!
