Hmmmm ...I would have thought the sign should have
been placed at the "beginning" of the hike.

Actually, nobody does any shooting on this or any other trail in Santa Barbara. This sign marks the end of a hike I wrote about, and end right next to a paved road. People used to target practice here, but it became very unsafe. Hence the sign.
