These two peaks are absolutely stunning. I think this one takes #1 in favorite winter climbs. The snow was very solid and grippy below treeline which helped with the bushwacking which actually was not that bad. The higher snow was consolidated and fairly easy to walk on. The final part of the ridge going up North was a bit icy. And the crux to go up Middle was kinda dicey. A quick snow test will give you an idea if it is safe or not. Do these on a clear day.
Even without making it to the middle one, the views were quite good, and the level of alpine feel was great!
A hard summit in winter.
I was so bummed the first time I was on this summit because my goal was Middle Chiwaukum. So have actually successful climbed this peak three times. I did this summit on the way to Middle Chiwaukum with Gimpilator as well on 2/28/10
These peaks are impressive in winter. The standard route was long and challenging but the views from each summit made it worth our effort. One of the best winter climbs I've ever done.
