North face of Voologata Cupola

The descent route to the North from Voologata stays right of the ridge separating Gular Glacier to the West from the Songuti Glacier to the East. It is a long of stretch of 45-50 degrees ice. Our crew did not have enough time to make it all the way down before sunset, and we made a bivouac about two-thirds way down, little ways below the last rappel. It was a bit surprising to wake up to the sound of the wind, and to see the pre-dawn stars. The gale just tore up our tent! But we remained unphased and nodded off for another hour of z's. With the Sun finally out, that's how our bivouac, and the descent tracks, looked like. September 1985.
