Language is indeed the house of Being! I wonder if I could ever enjoy the actual hike you are describing as much as I enjoyed reading your "Notes from Telescope Peak". Now I simply have to take a look at other reports you have written.

When I first started reading this, it was just because I'd been to the area & been up the peak. "What could be interesting about a TR about Telescope Peak?" I asked. Fortunately I underestimated the effect of your prose, linguistic investigations, & philosophical musings. I think I learn (or relearn, anyway) a new word or 2 every time I read a TR of yours, too :) "Graben" is also the modern German word for 'to dig,' BTW. Thanks for a provoking and enjoyable trip report. Death Valley is an incredible place that inspires contemplation.

To quote Oliver Wendell Homes "A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions".

Best I've Read

This is the best TR I've read yet. Excellent style and command of language. So many TR's do little more than say "I hiked this peak on...and here are my bad pictures," and too few tell an interesting story or wax eloquent about the meaning of the mountains or express personal revelations. Yours does all.

Your trip report of Telescope Peak is inspiring and provocative. As a newbie to the Sierra's, it was just wonderful to read.
