On the trail to the Johannesschartl

The Johanndsschartl is a tricky high alpine pass, recommended for experienced hikers only. There are some cables securing it on either side. However, with all the snow, no hikers were coming over it just yet. There was a heat wave coming up though, so maybe in a few more days. I'm not going there either. Not because I couldn't, for I've got the right equipment for it, but simply because I've got bigger plans: I want to climb the Lodner. The massive shadow on the right is in fact caused by the Lodner massive. But the easiest way up there starts with a detour. And so I head up the Zieltal valley, along the trail to the Johannesschartl. Somewhere higher up I'll turn to the right and go off trail. 15 July 2013.
