El Torcal is famous for its flora. More than 600 species grow there,, among them 30 types of orchids. This one is Ophrys tenthredinifera, which grows everywhere, even besides the parking lot at the visitor centre. May 18th 2008

Beautiful

This is a fantastic shot. It is amazing the number of different climates that orchids live in.

Glad you like it. There were quite many of these orchids around - but I only found them at the most remote part of the place. This one stood in a shady corner into which only a narrow beam of light shone.

It hit the orchid square in the face ...

Way to go. I find it tough to hit stationary objects sometime too! I hava a similar shot that I took when I was a kid. It is what we call a Shooting Star here in Montana, it also is an orchid that grows in wet shady areas in our mountains. People make tea out of the stems (so I hear) but I have never tried it. Cheers
