Product Description

Keeping your precious food supply from wild animals is crucial for an
enjoyable and safe outdoor experience. Allowing bears access to human
food can lead to dangerous conditioned behavior. It is tragic that every
year nuisance bears that become a threat to humans must be destroyed.

The Model 812 Backpackers' Cache Bear-Resistant Containers are top quality. They are expert tested (by bears), and have proven very effective in not only reducing odor transmission of the food inside, but also in keeping even the hungriest of bears out of your food supply.

The Model 812 Backpackers' Cache will keep your food, and the bears, safe.

Leaky
A friend of mine brought this on a 6-day trip to the Beartooth Wilderness Area recently. It rained quite a bit during our trip and water starting leaking into the cannister from the top. Our mistake was leaving it standing upright. If you have this cannister, set it on its side so that water doesn't collect on top where the lid is.

Also, you can't see through it which is a disadvantage when you have several of them. You can't tell what is in each cannister without opening each one.

Heavy
This thing is heavy and bulky.

Does the job
Bulky and can be hard to pack, but I have never had any problems with it, and there's a lot of room inside. It was nice to have above timberline in some places; I knew that my food was safe from critters like marmots since there was no place to hang it. Because of the hassle of packing it, I tend to use it only in places where they are required or where bears are a problem and not just a concern.

isnt perfect
yes you do need to flip it upside down and it is bulky, but I have found careful planning and packing of food can last me much more then six man days

Still have mine.
I have had my Backpackers' Cache 812 bear canister for at least 14 years and it still works great. The biggest annoyances are the canister size as well as weight when packed. But no animals have gotten into it, yet.
