September 2, 2007 Peak 13254 ft & Upper Hancock Lake To go to Van Wirt after snow melt, you should follow the trail on the left (east) side of the Upper Hancock Lake and then exit the trail and hike over the talus field above the lake to head back toward Van Wert. By doing so, you will avoid trampling the alpine tundra on the right (west) side of the lake
