Penitentes On The Khumbu Glacier, Central Himalayas
These ice penitentes were pushing straight up through the shale and dirt deposits on top of the glacier. I guess they are associated with pressure spots in the ice. Average height you see here is about 3 to 4 ft. Photo taken at about 17200 feet altitude right below the east face of Pumo Ri, on the way to Everest basecamp. May 2007
