Overview
From the Cleuson dam(2186M) we walk up to the Grand Desert Glacier(2 hours walk ,alt.3000M).
We reach the ridge of the Petit Mont Calme which is a pure rock climbing grade III+.
It takes one hour to climb it.
Summit at 3220 m.
Very nice technical practice for the Matterhorn!(same grading)
Low traffic,even inexisting at sometime making your training easier.
Getting There
From Sion ,capital from county Wallis,take the postal bus to Siviez.
Then you canwalk to the Cleuson dam.
Another option is to drive there with your car.
From the dam easy mountain path up to the hut(2485m;1h15mn)
Then an extra hour to the base of Grand Desert Glacier(2697m)
Then 45 min to the base of Petit Mont Calme
Red Tape
No permits required.No fees.Better to leave your car at the Cleuson dam.
The lane further is banned to traffic and very bumpy and steey!
When To Climb
Usually the best season is between June and September.
Not such an interesting mountain to climb in the winter season.
Could be very icy and hazardous.
Camping
It is possible to sleep at the hut before the glacier(only 15 places).The name is refuge de Saint Laurent.(2485m)
