Phainopepla

Phainopepla

This is either a juvenile or a female Phainopepla (Phainopepla nitens). Both juveniles and females are slate gray while the males are black. I took this photo in Pine Creek. Red Rocks, Nevada. October 2008. Phainopepla is a nomadic bird who loves mistletoe and other berries. It also eats insects, spiders and flower petals. It's song is a short trilling whistle of tlee-oo-ee. Length: 7.75 inches Wingspan: 11.5 inches
